The Tavern on Hicks
SYLVIE
Anton grabs the check the moment it hits the table.
My competitive streak is triggered by this show of macho behavior. âHey! No fair. I donât need you to buy dinner.â
âDidnât say you did,â he says, slipping a credit card into the folder. âIâm not trying to baby you. I noticed that you hate that.â
My smile is embarrassed, because he witnessed my meltdown earlier.
âBut I also happened to notice that we donât earn the same salary.â
âThatâs true,â I admit. âAnd a problem for womenâs sports. But Iâm not hurting like some of the girls. Iâm the bookkeeper for my dadâs hockey organization, so I brought my job to Brooklyn with me.â
âStill,â he says, giving me a confident smile. âThis is my treat. You can buy next time.â
Next time. I think Anton Bayer and I are becoming friends. âWell, thank you. I really appreciate it. And thank you for talking me off the ledge earlier.â
âIâve been out on that same ledge.â He shrugs.
My new phone starts chiming with texts, and itâs awfully loud. âSorry.â I pull out the phone. âIâm still getting used to this thing. All the featuresâ¦â
The texts are from Fiona. Some of my teammates are gathering in a Brooklyn bar. Itâs on Hicks Street! Are you in?
âWait until you win your first game,â he says. âThereâs a gold star that appears on the screen.â
âIâve heard about that. It sounds a little silly.â
âDoesnât it?â He chuckles. âBut, man, the Kattenbergers are onto something. After a couple of losses, youâll be missing that damn thing. Iâd do just about anything for the star.â
He signs the check while I read my texts. âDo you know where thereâs a tavern on Hicks Street?â I ask. âIs that nearby?â
âOh, sure. Iâll walk you over there.â He gets up. âThatâs the name of the placeâTavern on Hicks. Itâs the Bruisersâ second home, on account of being located between the arena and the practice facility. We usually walk there after home games.â
He holds the door open for me, like a gentleman. And we set off down the street together. Heâs so ruggedly handsome that a few women on the sidewalk turn and stare.
Iâm not immune to it either. Itâs not just his face. Thereâs something so sexual about him, that I feel overly aware of my own body when Iâm near him. I keep noticing tiny details about him, and each one is more fascinating than the last. He has golden hair on his strong forearms. And his long-legged gait is almost a swagger.
âYou donât have to walk me there,â I blurt out eventually. âI mean, you probably have other things to do on a Saturday night.â
âNot really. Ten bucks says my friends will be there, too. And thereâs practically a print of my ass on one of the barstools.â
âCharming,â I say, trying to play it cool.
âNot that you asked, but this part of Brooklyn is safe enough. Although Bryce would probably suggest taking a taxi home if you leave the bar after ten, and especially if youâre alone.
